PDX News Anchor Joe Smith stopped by W+K, on First Thursday in the Pearl, to interview my older brother Paulo about their multiplatform promotion of EA’s new video game, Dante’s Inferno.
When I told him I was proud of him, and he did a good job, he replied: “I didn’t think it was good at all. We didn’t get to show any of the interesting work.” I like that attitude, Paulo. Will the real Don Draper please stand up?

On Valentine’s Day weekend I went to see Nellie McKay perform at the Regattabar. I was particularly pleased to hear her sing a cover of a song that was originally written by one of my favorite composers-”Meditation” by Antonio Carlos Jobím. Hearing her sing that song stimulated my interest in Ms. McKay as a musician, and provoked a deepening awareness of one of the causes she champions-animal rights:

Prior to the Nellie McKay concert, I wasn’t aware of how cruel some of the practices carried out in the wool trade are, such as mulesing. I was decked out in wool clothing for the show, including my grandfather’s clan tartan tie. I guess I harbored the romantic fantasy about sheep going out to pasture in the UK because that’s where most of the wool products I’ve purchased are made. Unfortunately, that couldn’t be further from the case. After watching this video on PETA’s website, I was honestly shocked to witness how these practices are performed. Consequently, I went back to PETA’s website where you can sign this petition to stop buying wool. (Many thanks to Laura Lopez, Media Liaison for PETA, for granting me permission to use the logo posted above)

Back in December I visited Firefly Press with a group of my classmates from the SMFA. There’s an entire image gallery, documenting the inner workings of this letterpress studio, expertly prepared by Felix Santiago.
